The Hague, Arnhem, and Apeldoorn Host Cities for the 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship
The playing cities for the 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship have been announced. The Hague, Arnhem, and Apeldoorn will compete for the European title the day after the Olympic Games in Paris. From Tuesday, August 13 to Sunday, August 18, the Netherlands will host the European Beach Volleyball Championship for the fourth time in history.
Track Record in Beach Volleyball Events
The Netherlands has an extensive track record of hosting prestigious beach volleyball events. The 2024 edition will be the fourth time the European Beach Volleyball Championship is held in the Netherlands. In 2015, the country also hosted the Beach Volleyball World Cup.
From the first edition in 2006 (silver for De Gruijter/Ronnes and Kadijk/Mooren) to the most recent edition in 2018 (gold for Keizer/Meppelink), every ‘Dutch’ European Championship or World Cup edition has seen a medal won by a homegrown duo. So, expectations are high.
The 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship will take place after the Paris Olympics.
Playing Cities
It is almost no surprise that The Hague is one of the host cities for the 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship and that the (semi-) finals will also be played there on the beach of Scheveningen. Since the first European Championship in the Netherlands in 2006, The Hague has been a host city at every edition. In 2012 and 2018, The Hague won Dutch European Championship gold twice.
Alderman Hilbert Bredemeijer (sport) is proud that The Hague is hosting the EC: “The entire city is looking forward to seeing our athletes in action on Scheveningen beach. The Hague is the top sports city by the sea and home to Beach TeamNL, where all the Dutch top athletes train every day. It is great that we are hosting this European Championship in cooperation with the Nevobo and the other host cities. Especially after the previous successful beach volleyball tournaments in The Hague, with the World Cup at the Hofvijver in 2015 as the icing on the cake. This European Championship will be a sporting celebration for and with the entire city. Everyone in The Hague can experience it and take part in side events. This will get the whole city moving. I hope one of our beach volleyball duos from The Hague walks away with the gold.”
Gelderland also welcomes the European Beach Volleyball Championship to the host cities of Apeldoorn and Arnhem. Arnhem is a sports city par excellence. The capital of the province of Gelderland has a long tradition of hosting volleyball events. In 2022, for instance, Arnhem— with GelreDome transformed into a volleyball temple— hosted the Women’s World Cup (indoor).
Helga Witjes, member of the Gelderland Provincial Executive for Sport: “We are looking forward to welcoming another large-scale volleyball event to Gelderland, together with the municipalities of Apeldoorn and Arnhem, after the successful Women’s Volleyball World Cup in 2022. A major international sporting event is so much more than just the performances of top athletes. It really brings people together and provides fun. Moreover, through an extensive program of activities, it gets our residents moving. This is how we put Gelderland even more on the map as the sports province of the Netherlands.”
TeamNL Sport Experience
In 2024, a large-scale program of sporting activities under the name “TeamNL Sport Experience” will be launched, challenging visitors and the local community to actively engage in a sports-centric program of activities. A key aim is to further enhance the social value of top-level sporting events and connect them. The content of the TeamNL Sport Experience will be developed by sports associations, NOC*NSF, and other partners in the coming months, after which the European Beach Volleyball Championship will be one of the first events where this program will be organized. After that, the “travelling” festival will continue at future sporting events in the Netherlands.
