Draw for the 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship Completed

On Friday, 28 June, the draw for the 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship took place at Apeldoorn’s city hall. The draw was presented by Bas van de Goor, Olympic gold medalist in Atlanta and tournament director of the European Beach Volleyball Championship.

Guarantee of Success
From Tuesday, 13 to Sunday, 18 August, the Netherlands will host the European Beach Volleyball Championship for the fourth time in its history. The Netherlands has an extensive track record of hosting prestigious beach volleyball events. In addition to the four European Championships, our country also hosted the World Beach Volleyball Championship in 2015. From the first edition in 2006 to the latest edition in 2018, every ‘Dutch’ European Championship or World Championship saw a medal won by a homegrown duo.

Playing Cities
The 2024 European Beach Volleyball Championship will take place in three cities. The Hague, Arnhem, and Apeldoorn will host the competition for the European title shortly after the Olympic Games in Paris. It is hardly surprising that The Hague is one of the host cities, as it has been a playing city for every edition since the first European Championship in the Netherlands (2006). In 2012 and 2018, The Hague secured Dutch European Championship gold twice. Arnhem and Apeldoorn are also cities with extensive experience in organizing (beach) volleyball events.

Opening Match in Apeldoorn
During the draw, it was revealed where the 64 teams (32 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams) will play their pool matches and who their opponents will be. The full match schedule will be announced next week. Late last month, it was confirmed that Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon will play the opening match of the European Beach Volleyball Championship on the market square in Apeldoorn on Tuesday evening, 13 August.

Alderman for top sports events, Nick Derks: ‘We are extremely proud that Apeldoorn is one of the host cities for this year’s European Beach Volleyball Championship. It promises to be a spectacular tournament featuring great teams and exciting matches. We look forward to welcoming the athletes and fans to the capital of the Veluwe region.

Outcome of the Draw
The draw revealed, among other things, where the Beach Team Netherlands pairs will play their group matches. The Olympic duos Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot and Katja Stam & Raïsa Schoon will play their group matches in Apeldoorn. Steven van de Velde & Matthew Immers – who will also compete in Paris – will start in The Hague, as will Alexander Brouwer & Robert Meeuwsen. Arnhem can look forward to welcoming Christiaan Varenhorst & Leon Luini, among others.

Yorick de Groot:We have drawn some strong teams. It’s fantastic that family, friends, and all beach volleyball fans can enjoy top-level international matches during the EC in their own country. I have already secured two silver EC medals, so there’s only one logical color left to aim for. I’m looking forward to it!
